Why Hydration Is Important For Studying & Exams

Oct 11, 2023

If you have read any of our recent posts you will know we have been on a bit of a health trip here at Bump Your Grade. Today is no different and we are covering hydration.

Hydration is important for studying for exams because it helps to improve cognitive function, including concentration, memory, and mood. When you are dehydrated, your brain has to work harder to do the same tasks, which can lead to fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and forgetfulness.

Here are some of the specific ways that hydration can improve your study performance:

  • Improved concentration: Water helps to improve blood flow to the brain, which is essential for concentration. When you are dehydrated, your blood flow is reduced, which can make it difficult to focus on your studies.
  • Enhanced memory: Water helps to improve the production of neurotransmitters, which are the chemicals that allow brain cells to communicate with each other. Neurotransmitters are essential for memory formation and recall, so staying hydrated can help you to remember what you have learned.
  • Elevated mood: Dehydration can lead to irritability, fatigue, and difficulty concentrating. Staying hydrated can help to improve your mood and make it easier to stay focused on your studies.

In addition to the cognitive benefits, hydration is also important for overall health and well-being. When you are dehydrated, you are more likely to experience headaches, fatigue, and other symptoms that can interfere with your studies.

How much water should you drink?

The amount of water you need to drink each day varies depending on factors such as your activity level and climate. However, a good general rule of thumb is to drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day. If you are studying for an exam, you may want to drink even more water, especially if you are spending a lot of time sitting down.

Here are some tips for staying hydrated while studying for exams:

  • Keep a bottle of water with you at all times and take sips throughout the day.
  • Set reminders to drink water, especially if you are busy studying and forget to drink.
  • Avoid sugary drinks, such as soda and juice, as they can dehydrate you.
  • Eat fruits and vegetables, which are high in water content.
  • If you find water boring, you can always choose herbal teas, or even add a splash of juice to your water (just avoid those artificial sweeteners, flavours & colours)

By staying hydrated, you can improve your cognitive function, overall health, and well-being, all of which can help you perform your best on your exams.
