The Right Tutor Is The Perfect Springboard

Oct 24, 2022

As a teacher & tutor, I have had thousands of conversations over the years with parents and students alike. There are often misconceptions about teachers' & tutors' roles in education and the part that they play in student success. it's like with anything in life you get out what you put in and when the student gives 100% the tutor will give 110% in return.

The tutor's role is to provide the tools for the student to use both in their own study time and exams. There is no surprise when students turn up to lessons on time (or early) with a good attitude, notebook (or tablet these days), pen, and the mighty periodic table the chances of success quadruple.

As per the title of this article, I feel the term 'springboard' is a perfect analogy. A good teacher & tutor should provide the boost that is needed for the student to be successful in the exam hall. I like to think of an Olympic diver (say Tom Daley), the diving board (springboard) allows the diver to get that extra height on their jump but once the feet have left the board the effort and skill is all down to the diver to somersault their way to victory.

It is always worth noting that in any national exam situation students are not competing with the exam board they are competing with their fellow peers up and down the country. So if someone in your class is studying 5 more hours than you per week then you will want to study 6 hours or more to make sure you are top of the pile.
